Watching The Skies

The sky is the sea
The cloud is a boat
With the sun as a sail
It keeps afloat.

The birds they are fish
As they swim to and fro
Watch as they swim
Watch the boat go.

Feel splashes of rain
As they fall to the ground 
Listen to the thunder
As it rumbles around.

Flashes of lightning
Light up the sky
As on crested waves
The boat sails by.

In Memoriam

Born 15th March 1947, had she not been taken from us in 2012, my Mum, Valerie Withnell, would have been 78 years of age today.  It seems like ages since I spoke her full name out loud and it feels so poignant to write it now. However, though she is gone, she is not forgotten. Whenever I meet with family, she is remembered, talked about, laughed about and yes, still cried about too.  Anyway I decided to republish a post I wrote in October 2018 on the 6th anniversary of her death, in commemoration of her. Whispers and Wanderings - An Introduction

Welcome to Whispers and Wanderings!  This is the second blog I have created. The first one, "Just Stuff", drifted off over time, as life got in the way. However, I held on to my original pieces of writing, some of which will be making their way here from time to time. Why come back to blogging? Perhaps it is a mixture of things: to memorialise the occasional creative spark, as an antidote to over-thinking, or just a need to put thoughts into words again. Who knows! Whispers and Wanderings wont follow a strict path, the postings may be irregular - life often gets in the way! It will be to a collection of poems, short stories, and scattered ideas — whatever happens to whisper in my mind or to wander through my day.  Please forgive errors in grammar, poor sentence construction or my over use of punctuation (who doesn't enjoy a exclamation mark or a random hyphen here and there?) A Path to the Land of Sweet dreams

How a Faraway Tree, a Greendale bus, and a bathroom covered in talcum powder helped to shape a poem. I wrote the poem that follows this introduction, some time in the mid to late 1990s. My children were small and life was chaotic!  Days were full of school runs, after school activities, messy bedrooms, giggles and tantrums. Perhaps it wasn’t a perfect childhood - neither theirs nor mine, growing up in the 1970s - but it did have its share of wonder and of magic.  As a young girl, I lost myself in the books of Enid Blyton.  Stories such as "Come to the Fair", "The Magic Wishing Chair" and "The Faraway Tree with its ever-changing lands at the top were an escape into my imagination. Twenty-something years later, I shared these same books with my own children and watched as they created lands of their own, some borrowed from books, some created from their own imagination.  I remember finding Martin, (about 2 years old) covered in white powder.
